The police need police lights to see and be seen

Police lights can be broadly divided into two, based on their function. One type of police lights is used to make police vehicles conspicuous on the roads. These are mainly light bars and beacons that emit bright light. The other police lights are hand held police flashlights that policemen use to make the places and objects that they search more visible.

Sans police lights, police might appear like some sort of an anachronism that does not rhyme with the surroundings or settings. While their batons, guns, and knives may be their more visible gear, lights are a unique type of police equipment that is indispensable for their functioning. Police lights can be broadly categorized into two. The first is the lights of different colors used on police vehicles. These lights, which make conspicuous the police vehicles and its occupants, are activated even during daytime to declare police presence.

In some cases these police lights are switched on when the police are pursing another vehicle and require it to stop, while in other cases they are switched on when there is an emergency so that the police vehicle is allowed to proceed at high speed. Police vehicles may also switch on lights in a directional mode, to guide traffic to the different sides or around the vehicle. The most commonly used type of lights in this group is a police light bar, which may variously be LED, strobe, or halogen lights. Single rotating beacons are also used as police lights on vehicles, besides directional arrow sticks used for traffic direction. Light bars, beacons, and arrow sticks come in various sizes.

The second type of police lights is the flashlight that policemen use, and are found with them all the time like a third arm. It may occasionally function as a weapon of offense or defense as well. These lights do not make the policemen conspicuous but are used by them to make conspicuous the things that they are searching for. Flashlights are the most indispensable armor of night patrol policemen. The job of policemen being what it is, they are likely to need these extra bright police lights for most of their daytime activities as well. Dark alleys, cellars, and wooded areas are preferred haunts of antisocial elements and as such places where policemen are forced to search for evidence in crime investigation, or for booty recovery.

Policemen carry these handheld police lights even when day is at its brightest. They may also carry reserve bulbs and batteries in their holsters to make sure that these lights are at their functional best all the time. Many models of flashlights today come fitted with digital camera, camcorder, or voice recording facilities. So they do more jobs than that of mere police lights and have become multipurpose objects. Even in police vehicles, which use light bars and beacons to make themselves conspicuous, there could be additional lights to make other things visible.

Alley lights and takedown lights are examples of such police lights used to focus on different areas. Alley lights are small lights on either sides of the light bar and are fixed there to light up the street on both sides. Takedown lights are spotlights located below the light bars. These lights are required to illuminate a vehicle or investigation site in front, which is being searched. Policemen function efficiently by using in the right combination these police lights that they need to see and be seen.
